Recycle bins for when you are out and about in Buloke

Buloke residents and visitors are encouraged to recycle while away from home with new recycling bins and surrounds being installed in towns across the Shire.
The Buloke Shire Council in partnership with the Australian Packaging Covenant and Sustainability Victoria, are rolling out a project that will see the installation and promotion of public place recycling (PPR) infrastructure in Wycheproof on the Calder Highway. These bins will provide an environmentally and efficient service to allow the community and visitors to separate resources at these sites, in particular packaging.

Upcycle those odds and ends from the crockery cupboard

Here at Wycheproof central we are always on the look out for stylish ways to recreate and upcycle those things we no longer need.

I recently visited my sister doyen of all things crafty who revealed her latest project idea and that was to make a cake stand from old crockery and glassware.  The finished result looked great.

A quick whiz around Pinterest showed she wasn't alone in upcycling and creating some great items out of the old. Seems cake stands can be made of all sorts of things.

To get started: Gather your imagination and items together. Use a clear glue suitable for gluing ceramic and glass. Experiment with the design before gluing and viola there you have it, a stylish and functional item that would look great no matter the occasion.

The cake stand in question is made from a small glass bowl, glass plates of different sizes and glass vases. For best results use Araldite Ulta Clear or similar clear epoxy adhesive to glue it all together.

Autumn is a great time to compost

With the autumn leaves now falling and the autumn break now arrived for Wycheproof,  jobs to tidy the garden not going away any time soon. Autumn is a great time to think about composting, turning those leaves and other garden waste into rich soil to bring worms and break down that tough clay that we try to plant into.
Recently on ABC TV's Gardening Australia  there were some great stories about composting the waste from the garden and kitchen and other tips and tricks for recycling. If you missed the show you can review this special episode here Episode 05 - 13/04/2013

Shop smarter for food to reduce rubbish

There are lots of ads on TV at the moment from the ‘Kerbside Pride’ program featuring great ways to reduce your garbage and ideas to save you heaps of money.  When we throw food away we are not just throwing our own money away we throwing away the fuel and energy used to grow, produce and transport that food and collecting the rubbish from your bin.  Shop smarter by purchasing realistic amounts of food and check the use by dates on products to avoid them being spoiled before they are used.  If you have food scraps such as vegetable and fruit matter try using a compost bin to break them down and return the compost to your garden soil.   Aside from making your disposable rubbish load smaller, your plants will thank-you too!

Upcycling magazines: they make great bowls, plates or platters.

I've been seeing some great plates and platters made out of old glossy magazines, great to use for fruit bowls and other table settings.

The item below caught my eye, it is on sale through Oxfam, a great cause to support.

Upcycling magazines, particularly those made with thick glossy paper is a great way to save landfill and to express yourself creatively.

This is something we could workshop in Wycheproof! So if you are interested in learning how to do this or have any other upcycling crafty ideas contact the WCRC on facebook.

Tray made from recycled magazines

Tray made from recycled magazinesMade in Vietnam by Mai Handicrafts, recycled paper is incorporated into modern designs by rolling recycled posters into flat strips, dipping them into glue and hanging them out to dry. After this the strips are coiled into the patterns and shapes such as this eye catching tray and rimmed with a bamboo edge.
